For all those wishing to walk through the streets of France during this summer, visit the historic boulevards of Paris, kayak through the Gorges de Daluis, or enjoy the vineyards and lavender fields of Provence, such a thing is now possible for a large share of tourists worldwide.

Before planning your trip to France, here's an extended guideline of what you need to know.

France is among the European Union countries that have been keeping some of the most stringent COVID-19 restrictions since 2020. Although France opened its borders for visitors last summer, the country has been under lockdown thrice since then.

France went into its third national lockdown on April 3 due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, and now the county is reopening again cautiously from the last lockdown.

Domestic travel restrictions have already been lifted since May 3, allowing the residents to travel within the country again.

Who Is Eligible to Enter France This Summer?

Vaccinated travellers from 38 countries, including the residents of the rest of the 26 European Union Member States, were first permitted to enter France completely restriction-free on June 9.

Travellers from these countries, known as the green list of countries, are permitted to enter France regardless of their vaccination status.

Since Jun, the list has extended to include more countries, as follows:

27 EU Member States
Four Non-EU Schengen countries: Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein, Switzerland
European microstates: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican
20 third countries: Australia, Bahrein, Brunei, Canada, Chili, Hong-Kong, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taïwan, Ukraine, Union of Comoros, the United States, Uruguay and Vanuatu.

Vaccinated travellers arriving from these countries are eligible to enter without the need of going through any restrictions. All they have to do is present proof that they have been fully vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by the French authorities.

Unvaccinated travellers arriving from any of the countries placed in the green category are also permitted entry to France provided that hold proof they have been infected with COVID-19 in the last six months, or that they present the results of a negative PCR test carried out within 72 hours of arrival.

A special requirement regarding testing applies to unvaccinated travellers arriving from Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Spain, the Netherlands, and Portugal, as they must present a negative test result not older than 24 hours.

The testing requirement applies to all unvaccinated travellers over the age of 12.

Entering France From Countries in the Amber List

Entry restrictions have also been facilitated for those in the orange category as well, in which are placed countries outside the green and red categories.

Vaccinated travellers from these countries are also permitted to enter France without having to undergo any entry restrictions at all.

However, travellers from these countries who are not vaccinated must have a strong reason of entry, present a PCR test or an antigen test taken in the last 72 hours or 48 hours, respectively, before they show up at the country's borders.

Travellers from the UK are obliged to present a negative PCR or antigenic test taken less than 24 hours prior to departure.

Travelling to France From Countries Categorized in Red List

As per France's red list of countries, in this category are placed countries with a presence of COVID-19 variants, subject to stringent restrictions, which are Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Costa-Rica, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Maldives, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Seychelles, South Africa, Suriname, Tunisia and Turkey.

Vaccinated travellers from these countries can enter restriction-free, only by showing proof of vaccination.

Whereas, those who are not vaccinated can only enter the country for compelling purposes. Therefore, the obligation to present test results of a PCR or antigen test taken within the last 48 hours applies to these travellers. The same are also subject to a ten-day quarantine period.

'Pass Sanitaire' – What Travellers Need to Know About It

In order to facilitate travel this summer within the European Union, since July 1, France's "health pass" has become equivalent to the EU COVID-19 Digital Certificate and now is widely recognised within the block.

"Thus, the QR Code present on the French "Sanitaire pass" can be read anywhere in Europe, directly in the TousAntiCovid application and in paper format," a Government statement reads.

Consequently, those travelling to France can prove their health status through the EU COVID-19 passport. The passport can be used in paper or digital format, and travellers will be able to pass the border by using the QR code labelled on the passport.

After collecting their European format certificate, the French citizens are recommended to follow these next steps:

Check the regulations of their destination country
Print the certificate or import it into the TousAntiCovid app

Since August 9, except for the French citizens, the health pass will now be available even for non-EU travellers who wish to obtain such a document.

Since the same date, the documents is also needed for attending commercial catering activities, trade fairs and exhibitions, and professional seminars, department stores and shopping centres of more than 20,000 m², etc.

Travel Insurance – a Must for Every Traveller

Since May 19, museums and cinemas have opened up in France with a limited capacity. This means that the Musée D'Orsay, Louvre and several other sensational monuments such as Mont Saint Michel in Normandy are now open for tourists.

Spectators are permitted back into museums, arenas, monuments, theatres, auditoriums with a seated audience of 800 persons in indoor environments and 1,000 persons in an outdoor area.

Current Coronavirus Situation in France

France is one of the hardest-hit European countries by the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 6.6 million cases and 113,240 deaths as of September 9.

92.8 per cent of the adult population in the country have received t least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 78.6 per cent of the population are fully vaccinated now.
